How the General Search in Coapp Works

The general search helps members quickly find content and people they can access in their community.

The general search helps members quickly find content and people they can access in their community.

Where to find the search

In the web app, use the search field in the top navigation.

In the mobile app, tap the search icon to open the search page. Results update as you enter your search term.

How to search

  1. Enter a name, title, keyword, or tag in the search field.

  2. Browse the matching results.

  3. Select a result to open the corresponding post, event, member profile, or page.

  4. Scroll down to load additional results when available.

If you cannot find what you are looking for, try a different spelling or a broader, less specific search term.

What is included in the search?

The general search can return the following content types:

  • Posts

  • Events

  • Members

  • Pages

Depending on the content type, the search can consider information such as names or titles, descriptions, profile information, tags, and post content.

Filtering search results

Use the buttons at the top of the results page to narrow the results by content type:

  • All

  • Posts

  • Events

  • Members

  • Pages

You can select more than one content type. For example, select Posts and Events to display results from both categories.

Select an active filter again to remove it. Select All to clear the content-type filters and show every available result.

The displayed result count updates to reflect the currently selected filters.

Results from connected communities

If your community is connected to other communities through coapp Circles, the search may also return accessible content from those connected communities.

When a result comes from another community, its card displays the source community so you can identify where the content or member belongs.

Member results

Member results can include the member’s name, profile image, headline, and availability status.

Depending on your community’s settings, a member card may also display a matching score. You can open the member’s profile or start a direct conversation from the result card. The message action is not displayed on your own profile result.

Which results can members see?

Search respects each member’s access rights. Members only see content and profiles they are permitted to access.

Private, restricted, or otherwise unavailable content is not shown simply because its title or text matches the search term.

General search and administrator search

The general search is the member-facing search available from the main navigation. It follows the same visibility and access rules as the rest of the community.

Administrators may have additional search functions in the Manage area. These administrative tools serve a different purpose and may include records that are not available through the general search.

If no results are found

If no results appear:

  • Select All to clear any content-type filters.

  • Try a shorter or less specific term.

  • Check the spelling.

  • Try a related term or synonym.

  • Search for a tag used on the content.

  • Confirm that you have access to the content.
