Important considerations when accepting SEPA direct debit payments for memberships

Understanding SEPA direct debit in coapp via Stripe

SEPA direct debit is a popular payment method in Europe and is available in coapp through Stripe payments.

There are three important aspects to consider:

  • Chargebacks

  • Transaction limits

  • Activation requirements

Chargebacks

Under EU law, customers in the Eurozone can request a refund of a SEPA direct debit payment within 8 weeks of the transaction — without providing any reason.

This creates a potential risk for payments that were already received.

In Stripe, SEPA chargebacks are handled as disputes.

You can review disputes in your Stripe dashboard here:

Make sure to monitor disputes regularly to reduce financial risk.

Transaction limits due to chargeback risk

When you create a new coapp account and start accepting SEPA direct debit payments via Stripe, default limits apply:

  • €10,000 per transaction

  • €10,000 weekly limit

These limits typically increase quickly as you process more successful SEPA payments.

If you require higher limits, contact Stripe directly:

Activation requirements

SEPA direct debit must be activated individually for each community.

To activate SEPA for your community, please contact the coapp technical support team.

You no longer need to manually enable SEPA inside your Stripe account.

Requirement: Your Stripe account must be fully set up and connected to your coapp community before SEPA can be activated.

Conclusion

When using SEPA direct debit via Stripe in coapp, it is important to consider:

  • The 8-week chargeback window

  • Transaction limits for new accounts

Taking these aspects into account helps prevent payment issues and onboarding problems.
